Trading Fours: Jazz and its Milieu Conference,
May 11. Hosted by the Center for the Study of Race, Politics,
and Culture, the conference will focus on the role of improvisational
jazz music in the life of a community. Trading Fours
refers to a form of musical dialogue between improvising musicians-a
dialogue organizers hope to achieve between scholars, educators,

21st Century Science, through May 21. This lecture
series examines what technological advances the future might
bring. On April 23 David Weiss, clinical instructor in orthopedics,
surgery, and rehabilitative medicine at the University Hospitals,
discusses how modern medicine treats injury and aging. Rick
Stevens, professor in computer science, follows on May 21 with

Juilliard
String Quartet, April 27. The history of the Juilliard
Quartet extends more than 50 years. In its only Chicago appearance
of the season, the quartet will perform works by Mendelssohn,

Millennia Matter: 4,000 Years in the Making of the
Assyrian Dictionary, April 18. Eighty years after
scholars began the task of recording and defining the oldest
written language, the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary is nearing
completion. U of C professor and editor Martha T. Roth discusses
the making of the Assyrian Dictionary and what it has helped
