Rise to the occasion
In a transformed Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, the
University marks its capital campaign’s halfway point to $2
billion.
“Where are the pews?” guests
asked, even as they climbed the half-dozen temporary steps to the
floor constructed over said seats. That night some 500 alumni and
friends would dine in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, recognizing the
cathedral’s 75th year as the University thanked patrons for
their contributions, which recently helped Chicago’s five-year,
$2 billion capital campaign—the Chicago Initiative—reach
its halfway point.

Reg rats scrounge for book deals
Second only to the Seminary Co-op Bookstores’
yearly 20 percent-off discounts, the Joseph Regenstein Library’s
sale of old and duplicate books excites Hyde Park readers to fits
of bibliophilic fever. Opening on a Monday with hardcovers at $20
and paperbacks $10, and slashing prices each day until Saturday,
when items are free, the biannual sale inspires a shopper’s
craze resembling a miniature department-store clearance.

The greatest show on campus
One hundred and eleven years ago, during
the summer of 1893, the mile-long corridor between Jackson and Washington
parks seethed with hucksters, hustlers, freak shows, and fairgoers.
Spilling west from the White City—the grand Greco-Roman structures
built along Chicago’s southern lakeshore for the World’s
Columbian Exposition—the Midway Plaisance was an anarchic
avenue of ethnic displays and animal acts, designed to thrill, chill,
and titillate the 27 million people who attended the fair between
May 1 and October 31 that year.

A concentration by any other name...
The College Council voted unanimously March
30 to change the preferred term describing students’ focus
of studies from concentration to major, a switch
lamented by undergraduates who revel in the University’s tradition
of idiosyncrasy.
