Online, not in line
The University’s new Internet systems eliminate the long lines—and sleeping bags—of yesteryear.
For about five years University officials and technology experts have quietly toiled to bring administrative systems into the 21st century, foreseeing a day when students could register, add and drop courses, change addresses, pay bills, and view transcripts, financial aid, and permanent records through a central e-portal.

Presiding from Geneva
As the first president of the University’s Alumni Board of Governors to reside overseas, Stephanie Rada Zocco, AB’88, director of Switzerland’s Geneva Business Roundtable, plans to spend her two-year term highlighting “the growing role internationally based alumni are playing in alumni affairs.” About 11,000 of Chicago’s 135,000 alumni live outside the United States—a number that will only increase, Rada Zocco believes, as the University expands its undergraduate study-abroad programs, international internships and job opportunities, and overseas campuses.

Boston and Chicago’s public-school systems “share the tremendous challenge of serving large numbers of poor kids at high levels,” says Timothy Knowles, head of the U of C’s Center for Urban School Improvement (USI), but Chicago has a particularly strong “appetite and a willingness to undertake bold reform.”

College Report: First-years learn academic honesty
The University of Chicago Press usually takes at least a year to publish a book. But when political-science professor Charles Lipson approached editor Linda Halvorson last winter about a tome on the do’s and don’ts of plagiarism, the Press decided on a six-month publishing process, in time to distribute to this fall’s incoming students during Orientation Week.
