Patterns of place
M. Jane Balanoff, AB’76, met her husband, Jean C. Emond, AB’75, MD’79, in a Midway Studios painting class: “He liked a painting I was working on and came up to my easel and told me so.” Balanoff, who took classes at the Art Institute while a law student at DePaul, had her first show while living in San Francisco in the 1990s; today her work—like the 2006 Gate I (detail above; acrylic, oil stick, mixed media on canvas; 60 x 72 inches) is “focused on specific geographical places and the architectural forms within, including coastlines and horizons.” She will be in shows at the New Rochelle (NY) Media Loft gallery: Open Studios, Dec. 1–Jan. 27; and City Island/The Muse, a Feb. 10–Mar. 22 show featuring five artists’ responses to a series of dramatic photographs taken along the shores of Long Island Sound.—M.R.Y.
