A Chicago native, Denise Salinas joined the cheer team in fall 2007. She cheered for Loyola Academy before arriving at the U of C.
Did you have a background in gymnastics or dance before you became a cheerleader?
I didn’t, actually. When I first started, I wanted to learn the gymnastics skills, and I always tried hard. I guess that’s why I picked cheerleading up so quickly—because of the effort I put into it.
What did that effort entail?
My high school coach pushed us to be the best cheerleaders we could be. Because she wanted us to learn back handsprings and other skills, my teammates and I contacted a gymnastics club and attended their classes and open gym sessions on Sundays. We went as often as possible.
Watching you during cheer team practices, it’s clear that you’re a squad leader. How do you go about teaching stunts and dance routines to new members?
I teach with enthusiasm. I tell my teammates how much I enjoyed learning particular stunts in high school. I try to remember what my coach taught me and pass that information on.
How do you account for your team’s cohesiveness and success?
We work together, learn together, and go through hardships together. The bond we share is very important.
