Qui Zhijie’s Tattoo 1 (1997) focuses on the relationship between image and background. Breaking with the traditional, balanced relationship, Qui says, “the two find a common ground. By transforming into the same Chinese character, the image and background mingle and the expected distance between the two disappears.”
