TEACHABLE MOMENTS
Through the North Kenwood/Oakland Charter School on Chicago's
South Side, the University's Center for School Improvement aims to provide quality
education for urban students--and career opportunities for city teachers. http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/magazine/0208/features/index.htm

OFF-KEY SMASH
Chicago grads Mark Hollmann, AB'85, and Greg Kotis, AB'88, never
expected to win a Tony for their score for "Urinetown The Musical."
Then again, they never expected the show--whose plot revolves around public toilets--to
make it to Broadway either.

THE GREAT MEN OF THE GREAT BOOKS
An alumnus remembers what it was like to read
the Great Books with Mortimer Adler and Robert Maynard Hutchins. http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/magazine/0208/features/great.html

PRESIDENT BUSH VISITS ARGONNE
On July 22 President Bush became the first president
to visit Argonne National Laboratory. Bush used his visit to the laboratory, operated
for the Department of Energy by the University, to view antiterrorism inventions--and
to lobby for the proposed Department of Homeland Security.

THREE ALUMNI MAKE FORTUNE'S "MOST POWERFUL BLACK EXECUTIVES" LIST The

Merisant CEO Arnold Donald, MBA'80; and Genentech COO Myrtle Potter, AB'80. For

HOW CHILDREN LEARN
The National Institutes of Health has awarded six faculty

AQUINAS HELPS PHILOSOPHER DEBUNK HER OWN DISSERTATION
When U of C philosopher
Candace Vogler set out to publish her 1994 dissertation on practical reason (reason
directed toward action or policy), she ended up refuting her earlier work. Her
new book, due from Harvard University Press in November, became a defense of the
standard view of practical reason--and she used overlooked writings by Thomas
Aquinas to get there. http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/magazine/0208/research/invest-reason.html
