The Ellen and Melvin Gordon Center for Integrative Science--a $200 million facility designed to cross traditional boundaries between physics, chemistry, and biology--was dedicated in April, recognizing a $25 million gift from Ellen Gordon, president of Tootsie Roll Industries, and her husband, Melvin, the firm’s chairman of the board:

* New Disciplines for Old?
In the 2007-2008 school year, the University and the Franke Institute for the Humanities will open a new Center for Disciplinary Innovation. With a four-year grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the center will act as an incubator for developing a new model of flexible academic organization:

Although linguists have argued that certain patterns of language organization are the exclusive province of humans, researchers from Chicago and the University of California, San Diego, have discovered the same capacity in the common European starling. Their work, reported in the April 27 Nature, show that the starlings can be trained to reliably discriminate between two different rules for patterning the sounds they use to communicate:

* Gene Array Expert Joins Faculty
Kevin P. White, a pioneer in combining experimental and computational techniques to understand the network of factors that control gene expression during development and evolution, has been appointed director of the new Institute for Genomic and Systems Biology at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory, effective July 1:
