rankings are in
For the second straight
year, the University of Chicago has climbed some rungs of the
controversial U.S. News and World Report's annual survey of
the best national universities. This year, the College tied
for 10th with Columbia and Cornell Universities, surpassing
Northwestern, Rice, and Brown in the rankings. The College was
13th last year.
One
of the books
A gift of $37,500 from the Class of 2000, that is. The gift
went to create an endowed book fund for the purchase and upkeep
of a contemporary-literature and media section in the Regenstein
Library. First, the class went after the challenge grant of
$25,000 an anonymous donor had promised if they reached 60-percent
participation. After they reached that goal, the donor promised
another $5,000 for 65-percent participation. When they did that
and more (66 percent), the challenger dropped his cloak of secrecy:
trustee Peter
May, AB'64, MBA'65, called himself "blown away" by
the class's enthusiasm.
