"Compliments...and
a question"
I
really enjoyed two of the articles in the April/01 University
of Chicago Magazine. The article on Karl Meyer and his idealism
brought back the spirit of the anti-war movement of the 1960s.
Karl was a well respected if somewhat eccentric figure in the
Chicago movement, and I am glad to see that he has persevered.
The
article "All That Jazz" is also very interesting although
I have one bone to pick. In Chris Smith's discussion of jazz at
the U of C, there is no mention of Mwata Bowden, who is a faculty
member in the music department and the director of the very fine
U of C jazz ensemble. Why?

While
"All That Jazz" focused on a history of the University
of Chicago Jazz Archive, an April/94 Magazine article, "Free
Association," featured Mwata Bowden in an account of the
Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a cooperative
formed in Hyde Park in 1965.-Ed.
