International
business - More than 40 countries were represented when the
Graduate School of Business brought students from its Singapore
and Barcelona campuses to Chicago in June for a week-long study
session with their American counterparts. The annual event is
a staple of Chicago's Executive M.B.A. Program-which allows
working executives to earn their M.B.A.s part time-bringing
students from its three campuses to socialize, network, and
learn together in courses such as marketing, leadership, managerial
decision making and negotiation, persuasive communication, and
team dynamics.
The
business school kicked off this year's program on Sunday, June
24, with a welcome reception and dinner at the downtown Gleacher
Center, featuring Michael Hanley, MBA'89, of Price WaterhouseCoopers
speaking on "Meta-Capitalism." After dinner the 254
students broke into groups at 8 p.m. and continued interacting
through the week, spending days in the classroom and nights
socializing and sight-seeing.
Although
students from the Chicago and Barcelona campuses have participated
in these gatherings since the Barcelona program began in 1992,
the June event marks the first time that students from Singapore
have joined them in Chicago. The Asian program opened its doors
on September 14, 2000 ("Chicago Journal," December/00),
making Chicago the only business school in the world with campuses
on three continents.
Students
in the Executive M.B.A. Program attend one week of classes per
month while working in their profession. The week in Chicago
is not the only time students from the three campuses will get
together-future gatherings are planned in Singapore and Barcelona
in the coming year.-C.S.
