Year--round
help for first--years
The former Orientation Office has been reincarnated as the New
Students Office. Recently appointed director Rebecca Snyder, AB'91,
AM'96, says the New Students Office will establish a rapport with
first--year students year--round, not just during the initial 12--day
orientation period. With a central office located in Harper Memorial
Library--open to parents and students during the summer and academic
year--the New Students Office's additional programs include a second
student activities fair and a concentration fair during both winter
and spring quarters.
Home
base for post--docs
The College's new Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts intends
to pull together the wide array of Harper and Schmidt postdoctoral
fellows who are responsible for teaching Common Core social sciences
and humanities classes. The organization--supervised by a board
of University professors from various schools and divisions--will
provide the Harper and Schmidt instructors with a home base in
Gates--Blake, as well as scholarly conferences and professional
workshops.
Healthy
minds------and bodies
The newly opened Student Care Center at the Chicago Lying--in Hospital
began accepting patients on September 15. In the past, students
shared services with the public. The new facility is intended
just for students and promises shorter wait times. It offers the
services of three doctors, a nutritionist, and a nurse practitioner,
and consists of an acute--care clinic to provide medical assistance
within 48 hours as well as a continuity clinic to handle routine
services. Most care provided by the center is covered by the $101
quarterly student medical fee.
