1936 The Palm Beach Post profiled Donna Dickey Guyer, AB'36, paying particular attention to her career as a poet. She has also been a columnist for the Leisureville Post for ten years.

1940 The Class of 1940 celebrates its 60th reunion June 2--4, 2000. After 31 years, John W. ("Jack") Bernhardt, AB'40, retired from his position as regional sales manager at Electronic Component News. A reception was held in his honor on September 16. James W. Harding, MBA'40; Charles A. Johnson, AB'40, AM'41; and Daniel F. McCarthy, AB'40; see 1941, Stanley G. Harris. This April, Richard S. MacNeish, AB'40, AM'44, PhD'49, will receive the Society for American Archaeology's 2000 Fryxell Award for interdisciplinary research in archaeology. A symposium in his honor will be held at the group's annual meeting. Winner of the 1938 Golden Gloves boxing championship, MacNeish has also been a Guggenheim fellow (1956) and won the Spinden Medal for archaeology (1964). In 1996, he was honored by the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California and in 1998, he was made a lifetime member of the Society of Professional Archaeologists.
1941 Stanley G. Harris, AB'41, of Lincolnwood, IL, reports on a dinner of Phi Kappa Sigma alumni. Attending were James W. Harding, MBA'40, "who ended up atop Kemper," and Daniel F. McCarthy, AB'40, "who continues atop his Westmoreland Building in Skokie." J. Wilson Reilly, AB'41, AM'48, who lives on Lake Shore Drive, planned to attend the party, but a break--in at his summer home prevented him. Harris retired early from the Bell system to become assistant director of adult education at Oakton Community College, then worked as the assistant to the executive director of Centre East for the Performing Arts in Skokie. Harris also keeps in touch with Charles A. Johnson, AB'40, AM'41, who has retired from the State Department and lives in Washington, DC.

1944 Ruth Holland Waddell, AB'44, see 1949, John H. Waddell. 45 The Class of 1945 celebrates its 55th reunion June 2--4, 2000. The March 25 edition of the Wall Street Journal profiled Marianne G. Yampolsky, AB'45, describing her work as an artist and photographer in Mexico. Following a retrospective exhibit in 1998 at the Centro de la Imagen, she had a 60--image retrospective at Queens College's Godwin--Ternbach Museum in New York this past March. Yampolsky, who has lived in Mexico since 1944, joined the Taller de Gráfica Popular in Mexico City after graduating from the U of C, becoming its first female member.
1947 College alumni--Norman L. Macht, PhB'47, writes: Arnold L. ("Bud") Tanis, PhB'47, SB'49, MD'51, was honored this past summer by the Florida Pediatric Society/Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics with the John H. Whitcomb outstanding pediatrician award. During his 42--year practice, Tanis, who has become known to three generations of patients as Dr. Bud, has been an active advocate of children's rights. He lobbies the state legislature and Congress on issues concerning child safety and accident prevention, medical--coverage assurance, and breast feeding. Tanis lives in Fernandine Beach and practices in Hollywood. He also has found time to be a leader in the U of C alumni club in that area for as long as memory can recall. There are no signs that Dr. Bud will be lessening any of these activities in the foreseeable future, an outlook that helps to keep him as young in spirit as his patients. 1949 In June, Fred E. Fiedler, AM'47, PhD'49, professor emeritus of psychology and of management and organization at the University of Washington, received the American Psychological Society's James McKeen Cattell Award. Fiedler is an internationally known researcher in leadership and organizational performance. In 1996, he was honored for his contributions to the field by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and in 1993, he received a distinguished--educator award from the American Academy of Management. He gave an invited address at the June convention of the American Psychological Society in Denver on the role of cognitive resources in the leadership process. John H. Waddell, X'49, created a four--figure bronze sculpture, That Which Might Have Been, Birmingham 1963, which was installed in a specially designed courtyard at the Carver Museum and Cultural Center in Phoenix. The larger than life--size sculpture represents what might have been the maturity of the four girls killed in the church bombing on September 15, 1963, in Birmingham, AL. Waddell's bronze sculpture Seated Harpist is displayed at Ravinia Park in Highland Park, IL. His Seated Flutist is displayed at National--Louis University. Waddell has an M.F.A. and an M.A.E. from the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as an honorary doctorate from the National College of Education. This year, after working with a dancer/choreographer/ teacher, Waddell and his wife, Ruth Holland Waddell, AB'44, performed a short, expressive dance to the music of Philip Glass, AB'56, celebrating their 50 years of marriage. The couple continues to work in their studio and receive visitors in their sculpture garden of John's major works. This corrects information published in the June--August/99 issue.--Ed.
1950 The Class of 1950 celebrates its 50th reunion June 2--4, 2000. Anne Garvey Phillips, AM'50, taught English composition at both UCLA and Santa Monica Community College for 24 years, retiring in 1989. She also wrote a textbook on advanced reading that is used in the U.S. and abroad. In retirement, she has published a collection of poetry. She married Robert Marvin Phillips in 1977.

1960 The Class of 1960 celebrates its 40th reunion June 2--4, 2000. After 33 years, Kenneth J. Brown, SB'60, has retired from the University of Wisconsin--Stevens Point. As coordinator of mathematics tutoring, he served on a committee reviewing the grading process and on a campus task force on tutoring. In retirement, he'll restore antique automobiles and raise bromeliads and unusual conifers. His backyard contains 200 conifers, and he has published articles in the Bromeliad Society Journal. He shares his botanical hobbies with his wife, Joan McAuliff, a professional photographer.
1962 College alumni--Mike Einisman, AB'62, MBA'63, and Judith E. Stein, AB'62, AM'64, write: We've been delighted to receive so much upbeat news in 1999. We hope the year has treated all of us well. Deborah Dinitz Strauss, AB'62, AM'64, closed the year by being named to the Non Profit Times's Power and Influence Top 50. As executive director for the Information Technology Resource Center (ITRC), Debby was cited as "a leader in the national technology strategy" and joins the company of George Soros and Ralph Nader. Herb A. Schwartz, AB'62, has moved to Garberville, CA. After a lifetime of urban living, he has returned to environmental issues and now serves on the boards of the Institute for Sustainable Forestry and Sanctuary Forest. He urges classmates to think about the studs in their houses and the lungs of our planet: "Remodel your kitchens with SmartWood and support efforts to save old growth trees." Some of us have taken to the skies: Joan Saks Berman, AB'62, writes, "I was in Norway in June to attend the Women's Worlds 99, a.k.a., the 7th International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women, held on the university campus in Tromsö, north of the Arctic Circle," while Avima Ruder, X'62, an epidemiologist for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Cincinnati, presented the results of her research on the mortality of dry cleaners at the International Conference on Epidemiology in Occupational Health meeting in Herzliya, Israel, in mid--October. From Sandra Jackson Cohen, AB'62, we hear that, at summer's end, she returned home to Annapolis after "completing the harvest at our blueberry farm in Michigan and celebrating a 35th wedding anniversary with our family in a most satisfying style: campfire on the deserted beach of Lake Michigan, under the towering wooded cliffs of the farm." When she is not harvesting, Sandy is the assistant attorney general of Maryland. Janet Varner Gunn, DB'62, AM'64, sent us her very first alum message: "Following 17 years of ongoing residency in Hyde Park, 14 years in North Carolina, three years in the Middle East, two years in South Africa, I can at long last be found at home in Portland, ME, and would love to hear from old comrades, especially George Phillips (Tosca in Philly, 1961)." From Queens College, Jack Zevin, AB'62, MAT'64, announces that his new book, Social Studies for the 21st Century: Methods and Materials for Teaching Secondary Social Studies, has just been issued with a 2000 copyright by Lawrence J. Erlbaum Associates of Mahwah, NJ. Barbara Flynn Currie, AB'68, AM'73, majority leader of the Illinois House of Representatives, writes, "I had a good spring legislative session, sponsoring a variety of measures that made it to the governor's desk. Some of my favorites include prohibiting corrections officials from shackling women during labor and childbirth, requiring unsolicited commercial e--mail solicitations to identify themselves, establishing pilot programs to beef up training for welfare recipients on their way to the world of work, and requiring parents to keep firearms unloaded and out of the reach of children." 1964 Dena Criz Weisbard, BFA'64, writes, "Somehow I was reported as retired. My retirement lasted one weekend. The following Monday, June 1, 1998, I joined the marketing department of Indiana's largest law firm. Barnes & Thornburg has six offices, including one in Chicago. I'm in the Indianapolis office."
1965 The Class of 1965 celebrates its 35th reunion June 2--4, 2000. Terry W. Moyemont, AB'66, spent the past year producing a documentary on U.N. preventative deployment peace keeping in Macedonia. Next, he'll do a documentary on conflict mediation for the U.S. Institute of Peace. He writes, "Between videos, I've gotten married, and my wife, Terri, and I are renovating the house that we own on Crete."
1967 College alumni--Deanna Dragunas Bennett, AB'67, writes: All our classmates seem to have gone to ground and become un-- communicative over the summer. This could be because of summer activities. Or is this because we've become introspective at the prospect of most of us celebrating a 55th birthday next year? This is a more important milestone for your class correspondent than 50 because I will become retirement eligible! Since there's no new news, I've again mined our reunion book to share some of the wide range of avocations noted by classmates. Alfred J. ("Sandy") Lewy, SB'67, PhD'73, MD'73, reads history while working out on the Stairmaster and is an avid cook. Nili Olive Olay, AB'67, loves to read Austen, the Brontës, Dickens, etc., as well as mysteries, and is on the board of the Jane Austen Society of North America. The main outside activity of Barry A. Weitz, AB'67, is coaching grammar--school baseball and basketball teams. Robert M. Vare, AB'67, AM'70, loves to travel and listens to jazz at every opportunity. Helen Stein, AB'68, reads voraciously and devotes lots of time to growing things on her 3.5 acres of woods and garden in Kansas. Brian K. In 1975, she earned a Ph.D. in English and American literature from Brandeis University. She is now an associate professor of English, with tenure, at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO. Melvin L. Silberman, AM'65, PhD'68, a professor at Temple University, received the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for distinguished teaching. He is the author of 26 books and was the driving force behind the development of Temple's adult and organizational development program.
1969 Marcus K. Felson, AB'69, and his wife, Mary A. Eckert, celebrated their third anniversary this past summer. The couple lives in Montclair, NJ. Felson is a criminal justice professor at Rutgers University and Eckert is research director at the New York City Criminal Justice Agency. K. George Pedersen, PhD'69, began his career as a teacher, vice principal, and principal of both elementary schools and high schools. While a student at the U of C, he served as the associate director of a major study of educational finance for the state of Michigan. He returned to Canada in 1972 as the dean of education at the University of Victoria, where he later was academic vice president. He has served as president of five universities. In 1998, Pedersen was elected chancellor of the University of Northern British Columbia. In 1992, he received the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal and was appointed an officer in the Order of Canada in 1993. In 1996, he received an honorary doctorate degree from McMaster University. He and his wife, Penny Pedersen, have a son, Greg, a daughter, Lisa, and an "acquired" daughter, Diane. His interests include golf, travel, carving, and fishing. Patricia Moeller Steimer, MAT'69, reports that her husband surprised her this past April with a trip to Chicago. He had arranged to renew their wedding vows at Bond Chapel, where they were married 30 years before. Steimer writes, "He had not only reserved the chapel but also had arranged for an organist, a minister, and the presence of my matron of honor. I guess he is probably the best thing I got from my University education!"
1970 The Class of 1970 celebrates its 30th reunion June 2--4, 2000. Valerie Cramer Ciancio, AB'70, passed the CPA exam and is enrolled in Northern Illinois University's master's of tax program. Eleanor D. A. Kinney, AM'70, co--directs the Indiana University School of Law's Center for Law and Health. She joined the faculty in 1984 and teaches administrative law, health--care financing and regulation, and insurance law. Lawrence W. Sherman, AM'70, a criminologist, was named director of the Fels Center of Government at the University of Pennsylvania. He was also appointed the Albert M. Greenfield professor of human relations in the sociology department. John L. Tymoczko, AB'70, PhD'73, was recently appointed the Towsley professor of biology at Carleton College.
1971 Jeffrey L. Doering, AB'71, PhD'75, is a professor and chair of biology at Loyola University Chicago. He and his wife, Marilyn, have two daughters, Valerie, 22, and Andrea, 18. Beginning this August, Jordan I. Kosberg, PhD'71, holds the University of Alabama endowed chair of social work. He was previously a professor of social work at Florida International University in Miami and was the Philip S. Fisher professor and director of the Centre for Applied Family Studies in the School of Social Work at Montreal's McGill University.

1973 Matthew M. Franckiewicz, JD'73, writes, "In November 1998, I was inducted into (or is that inflicted upon?) the National Academy of Arbitrators. To an arbitrator, this is equivalent to a ballplayer making it to the big leagues. In May, I had an angioplasty and a stent for a blockage in a coronary artery. I await a second round of the same for a blockage in another artery." Harvey Mantel, AB'73, AM'76, writes, "Married and family life have been going very well for us; Titania and I will be married 20 years next March, have three wonderful children, and one grandchild. Coincidentally, Kenny's and Michelle's respective bar and bat mitzvah years coincided with my 20th and 25th College reunion years--at which celebrations it was great getting together with all the mutual friends in attendance--likewise our SSA 20th...Losing one of my best friends, Joshua Fein, AB'73, was tragically difficult--we all pulled through it; such losses are indeed painful--as when late, great brother Dr. Fred departed this world in January 1992 after a valiant three--month battle with pancreatic cancer." An adult inpatient psychiatric social worker with the state of Illinois--most recently at Madden Mental Health Clinic--Mantel says his work "has been challenging, to say the least! I also do crisis intervention part time for Maine Center for Mental Health. We've been living in Skokie for around nine years and enjoy it." He planned to vacation in and around Playa del Carmen, Mexico, this past summer.

1975 The Class of 1975 celebrates its 25th reunion June 2--4, 2000. Jeffrey S. Rasley, AB'75, formed a new law firm in Indianapolis. Rasley Jinks & Abrams, P.A. is a general practice with emphasis on business representation, estate planning, and litigation. He writes, "I look forward to assistance from younger lawyers and more time off." Ordained a deacon at First Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church, Rasley organized his fourth Himalayan expedition, which took place this past October. Joseph A. Varacalli, AM'75, was named acting chair of the sociology department at Nassau Community College--SUNY for the fall 1999 semester. He is also finishing his four--year term as editor in chief of the Catholic Social Science Review.
1976 Paul Finkelman, AM'72, PhD'76, was named the Chapman distinguished professor of law at the University of Tulsa. He moved to Oklahoma in August, after spending the sum-- mer as a visiting professor at Lewis and Clark School of Law in Portland, OR. At Tulsa, he will teach courses in constitutional law and legal history.

1986 College alumni--Michael Fitzgerald, AB'86, writes: A potential member of the class of 2022, Arturo Joseph (A. J.) Poznanski, was born to Lynette Silvestri, AB'86, and her husband, Richard Poznanski, on September 28. Not long before that, Lynette reports that she was one of a number of Maroons attending a surprise 35th birthday party for John A. Uglietta, AB'86, orchestrated by his wife, Sue. Also attending were John J. Ludwicki, AB'86; Michael J. Hughes, AB'86; John Culbertson, AB'86; and Malcolm K. McGowan, PhD'91. Also celebrating a new baby were Elizabeth S. Thielman, AB'86, AM'91, and Wayne J. Scott, AB'86, AM'89. Julian Scott Thielman was born October 3, to the "admirable tolerance" of his older sister Miriam and the "unconditional delight" of his parents. Elizabeth R. 1987 College alumni--Alison L. Inafuku, AB'87, writes: It's been a busy wedding season for Class of '87 alumni! From New York: Jean H. Osnos, AB'87, married Bill Volonte on April 25 in Manhattan. Both Jean and her husband are attorneys; Jean is with the New York Consumer Affairs Department. From Singapore: For James A. Graf, AB'87, it was three weddings in three countries. He and Christine Low had a civil ceremony in Singapore on April 30, a Chinese wedding and two receptions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on August 6 and 7, and a church wedding in Minneapolis--St. Paul on August 28, at which Anthony A. Kuznik, AB'87, served as best man. From Chicago: Jay D. Woldenberg, AB'87, MBA'89, reports that he "shocked the experts and entered a state of matrimony" with Kathy Shepherd, a pediatrician, on September 5. There were three U of C alumni present. 1989 College alumni--Elizabeth Hughes, AB'89, writes: By the time you read this, winter will be in full swing and 1999 will be winding down. Now, here's the news: Louise Flajnik Bauer, AB'89, reports that after graduation she married Dean Bauer, and they now have two sons, 4--year--old Alec and 2--year--old Ethan. Louise received her J.D. from Loyola University and is currently practicing family law at John L. Fay & Associates. Christina M. Lass, AB'89, also went on for a law degree--from Valparaiso University in 1992--and recently became a partner in the law firm Sheridan & Associates, P.C. in Wheaton, IL. The name of the firm will be changed to Sheridan & Lass, P.C. Nader I. Salti, AB'89, MD'93, finished his colorectal--surgery fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago and is now in private practice in Racine, WI. Julia Llewellyn Ketcham, AB'89, and her husband, Matt, had their first child in June. David J. Adelman, AB'89, MBA'90, and his wife, Ilana, also have a new baby, their second. David and family live in Manhattan, and he works at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, where he analyzes the tobacco industry. Sunil Garg, AB'89, was chosen as one of 16 winners for the 1999--2000 White House fellowship program. Sunil will spend the year working with leaders in government to help draft and review legislation, research public--policy initiatives, write speeches, etc. That's it for now. 1990 The Class of 1990 celebrates its 10th reunion June 2--4, 2000. College alumni--Grace Chan, AB'90, AM'90, writes: Hi, everyone! You all have been relatively quiet the past few months. Two of our classmates, though, did have news to share. Jill Olson de Jong, AB'90, finished an M.D./Ph.D. program at the University of Wisconsin--Madison in May. She and her husband, Peter H. de Jong, AB'90, moved to Boston, where Jill started her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital. Peter has been busy playing hockey and is happy to be able to stay with the same company, Green Tree Financial (Conseco), by transferring to its Boston office. The de Jongs have also been able to make the U of C connection in Boston with Andrew C. Rudalevige, AB'89, and with Nada Kojic Wheelock, AB'91, and Christopher B. Edoardo writes, “It was a fantastic time—perfect weather, great friends, and a stunning bride! After the honeymoon on the Greek islands, we packed up, left San Francisco, and moved to Boston, where Susan is a professor of accounting at Harvard Business School. For me—well, I followed my wife. Does anyone have a job in Boston?” Eric X. Leurquin, MBA’91, reports that on September 20, 1998, his wife, Anne Gerarts, a health-promotion and AIDS specialist, gave birth to their first child, Elise. On January 1, Leurquin became market risk management auditor at BBL–ING, a European bank. He had been a pension fund manager there. In July, he was also named as a certified internal auditor by the Institute of Internal Auditors. Noelani V. Nitz, AB’91, writes, “I am enjoying Gifu, Japan, as the new foreign legal consultant for the intellectual property law firm Hiroe and Associates. 1992 College alumni—Lesley F. Kim, AB’92, writes: I was looking through the Class of ’92 pic book, and I thought about many of you and wondered what you’re up to these days. Send your news—or just your thoughts on the meaning of life—to me sometime. Credence E. Fogo-Schensul, AB’92, and Michael J. Fogo-Schensul, AB’94, are the proud parents of Rafael Darrow Fogo-Schensul, born July 31. Credence graduated from law school in May 1998, and is currently clerking at the Oregon Court of Appeals. Credence writes, “In September of next year, I will move to Seattle for a year to clerk at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; after that, I will hopefully find a real, grown-up job. I’d love to hear from other alums in Seattle, as I don’t know the city at all.” Michael also graduated from law school in May 1998, and is a criminal defense lawyer in Portland, OR. David E. Troolin, AB’92, went overseas to Papua New Guinea as a language survey assistant with a linguistic organization. He met his wife, Sarah, there, and they were married in Sarah’s home country, Australia. They are now “pursuing further linguistic training to help them in language development work through Bible translation and literacy among the speakers of unwritten languages.” On September 18, Linda L. Wolfenden, AB’92, married Arjun Srinivasan in Massachusetts. Linda and Arjun met at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where they are both residents. Linda is in her final year of an internal-medicine residency and will begin a fellowship at Hopkins in pulmonary and critical-care medicine in July 2000. Linda says hello to Daniel J. In 1997, An was awarded the National Health Service Corp scholarship. On May 14, he received an M.D. from New York Medical College. He and Elena are returning to Utah, where he’ll do a residency in family medicine. David A. Attis, AB’93, and Diane Kelleher, AB’93, were married in Washington, DC, on August 7. Diane is an attorney at the New York law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell, and David is completing his Ph.D. at Princeton University. On February 27, Eric N. Glasgow, AB’93, married Molly Head of Houston. Following their honeymoon in Bali, the couple relocated to London, where Eric is a gasoline trader for Swiss-based Vitol SA, and Molly is working for a leading Internet design firm. Chicago native Sandra P. Franco, SB’93, graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in May. 1995 The Class of 1995 celebrates its 5th reunion June 2–4, 2000. College alumni—Kathleen Abbott, AB’95, writes: I finally have some Class News of my own to contribute. After four years, I decided to stop talking about it and actually started law school at the University of California, Davis. It’s a big change from Chicago (they won’t give me $1 shakes on Wednesday, and no one understands the need for big orange chairs in the library), but once it snows in Tahoe I’m sure I’ll get over it. Since she and I did everything together in college, I guess it is only fitting that everyone’s favorite Montanian, Nadine M. Horning, AB’95, is also back in school. Kaiser, AB’95, writes, “After four years of living in New York City, I decided to return to Chicago to finish my last two years of law school. The newlyweds will spend a year in Boston, where Andrew will complete a medical internship while his wife pursues her master’s in public health at Harvard.
