In Sheng Qi’s 2000 trio of photographs, Memories (Mother), Memories (Me), and Memories (Mao), small snapshots rest on his self-mutilated hand. Sheng writes, “The record of my left hand records Me from 1965 to the present./The imperfect left hand + old photos...is me./This is the collection of my memories, all of the images of my life./The imperfect left hand + old photos...is me.”
