College alumni—Lonnie Stonitsch, AB’82, writes: Lee A.
Banaszak, AB’81, reports: “Hi! I am an associate professor in
political science at Penn State University and wanted to let my
old U of C friends know about the birth of my son, Isaac Banaszak
Plutzer. He just turned 9 months old (so it is a little late for
a birth announcement) and is into the crawling and exploring stage.
He is a big fan of the U of C alumni magazine, but largely because
it tastes so good and makes a great sound when you tear the pages
into small pieces.”
College alumni, please send your news to: Lonnie Stonitsch,
AB’82, 1821 S. Peoria St., Apt. 2R, Chicago, IL 60608. Phone: 312/226-9712
(h). E-mail: missmaam@bigfoot.com.

world-champion ultrarunner Sue Ellen Hamilton. In addition to writing,
she has launched a second career as an artist and has an art agent
who represents her. Also this year, her watercolor, gouache, and
X-ray art was displayed in two group shows in Chicago, one at Church
of the Epiphany and one at Excalibur nightclub. In November she

all-U-of-C-alum company where I work, Neustadt Creative Marketing—headed
by Mark S. Neustadt, AB’80—recently had a project selected
for inclusion in Communication Arts’ graphic design annual. The
project was a redesign of the St. John’s College viewbook, a reassuring
indication that the Great Books still have the power to raise an
eyebrow or two.

Hyman, AB’82, AM’88, 2219 Shefflin Court, Baltimore, MD 21209.

William J. Clark, AB’84, reports that he and his wife,
Jo Ellis, had another son, Gunnar. “Jo and I often have to rescue
him from the hugs and kisses of his two older siblings, Arthur,
4, and Ursula, 2. He is already under the care of our Korean nanny,
and I’m sure that his first words will be Korean, as his siblings’
were. If anyone from my era is in the Bay Area, stop by and experience
chaos firsthand!” R. R. Donnelley & Sons named Isabelle M. Day,
MBA’84, the vice president and division director of the company’s
South Daytona, FL, division. She joined the company in 1996 as vice
president of marketing for magazine publishing services business

Swanson, AB’86, reports: “After spending my last 50 days in
the Peace Corps as a hostage of the New People’s Army (Philippines,
1990), I spent several years in jobs that led nowhere. On the plus
side, my wife, Merle, and I had Michael, 7, and Angela, 2.” In 1996,
Tim earned an M.I.M. from the American Graduate School of International
Management. Now in the Foreign Service, he’s moving to Seoul in
February, where friends can find him at the consulate. LeAnn

Katharine
Walsh Harless, AB’86, has lived in the Bay Area more than ten
years and married Mike Harless in 1994. “We just had our first baby,
McKeegan (Mickey, for short),” she writes. “Thankfully, he’s been
very patient with us so far. I’m back at work as director of production
at ZDTV—a 24-hour cable channel about computers. We launched in
early May (just before we launched our little family addition),
so things have been quite hectic.” She can be reached at katie_walsh@zd.com.
Michael F. Fitzgerald, AB’86, says he’s “learning to like
change.” On October 25, 1997, he married Lark D. Kerr in Framingham,
MA. Attendees included best man J. Lorand Matory, AB’86,
AM’91, PhD’91, and groomsmen Andrew E. Wrobel, AB’85, MBA’87,
and Stewart L. Winger, AB’85, AM’93. Seven other alumni attended
the wedding. Four months later, the couple headed to San Francisco,
where Mike is senior news producer at ZDNet News (www.zdnn.com).
Contact him at michael_fitzgerald@zd.com.

College alumni—Alison L. Inafuku, AB’87, writes: William
L. Florida, AB’87, AM’87, reports that he “currently markets
toothpaste to the Japanese.” He has lived in Tokyo for the past
seven years and plans to move to Lausanne, Switzerland, at the new
year. He recently ran into Jonathan M. Herskovitz, AB’88,
who has been in Japan for many years and is now writing for Reuters.
Florida also studied Japanese with Paul A. Consalvi, AB’87.

either Tokyo or Lausanne. For those who were wondering, he confirmed
that he no longer wears green pants. E-mail him at william.florida@
ibm.net. Jonathan Q. Tritter, AB’87, was inspired to
write in by the recent news of Jay D. Woldenberg, AB’87,
MBA’89, noting that “Jay’s inherent modesty has changed little in
the last decade.” You probably remember Jonathan as Jonathan Evans:
“...the joys of growing up in a divorced family led to a new name
at the grand old age of 21.” Jonathan received a Ph.D. in sociology
from Oxford University and is now an associate professor of sociology
at the University of Warwick. He still swims and participates in
the occasional triathlon and “even managed to finish the London
Marathon a few years ago.” Jonathan also reported that he saw David
B. Goldenberg, AB’87, in New York City in August. David is a
psychiatrist at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and, according to

have three children and “a legitimately good reason to be missing
sleep.” After working at Northwest Airlines and acquiring an M.B.A.
from Harvard while working at Bain & Co., Tim started Great Northern
Capital in St. Paul, MN, with two partners. He writes that his new
firm is a “quantitative-oriented investment-management firm focusing
primarily on the major institutional marketplace.” E-mail him at
twicks@gnci.com. Kenneth
R. Holston, AB’87, was appointed a visiting assistant professor
of European history at Amherst College. Ken earned a Ph.D. from
the University of Pennsylvania and has been a lecturer at Penn as
well as Suffolk University.
In September, I spent six days on a Backroads trip hiking, biking,
and kayaking around the breathtaking San Juan Islands of Washington
state. I met a U of C alum on the trip: James E. Mann, JD’68,
who still lives in Hyde Park and is one helluva bicyclist! Hope
to hear from you all soon!

College alumni—Matthew Lay, AB’88, writes: Lisa D. Magnas,
AB’88, your class reunion chair, would like to salute all ’88 classmates
and their families who were in attendance at Reunion ’98—they all
helped to make the event a great success! She also recognizes many
of those who could not attend yet participated in other ways (Thanks
for the congratulatory notes and life updates!). Last but not least,
she thanks those classmates who helped her chair the reunion planning
committee and gave their time throughout the year. Lisa adds: “Chicago
was in full bloom and the campus was in great shape for staging
our memorable ten-year reunion. It was truly thrilling to catch
up and renew friendships. Wonderful news, achievements, and life
changes were shared by all and proved to be very inspirational.
The only real daunting aspect for me was when I realized that, come
September, my youngest sister (Talia, Class of 2002!), who had been
in diapers during our freshman year, would be starting her first
year at our great institution! I am looking forward to everyone
kicking in for the next reunion and helping the next chair—any takers?!”
