has just retired as chair of the foundation's board
of trustees. The grant to Chicago, where Gray was

RESEARCH
AT CHICAGO
* MEMS ARE
MADE OF THIS
Chicago physicists have measured the angular momentum
carried by tiny rings of light known as optical vortices--an
important step in harnessing their energy to power
microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. Industry
observers say that MEMS devices could lead to the
production of everything from nanorobots to laboratories-on-a-chip:

* NEW SALAMANDER
SPECIES IS OLDEST YET
A 161-million-year-old Chinese fossil not only reveals
a new species of salamanders but also provides proof
that much of the evolution of salamanders occurred
in Asia. Described in the March 27 Nature, the new
species was discovered by Neil Shubin, chair of the
organismal biology & anatomy department, and colleagues
at Chicago and Peking University. Before the discovery,
the earliest complete salamander fossil dated back
only 65 million years. http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/030403/salamanders.shtml
