Erving
E. Beauregard, AB'42, Notables of Harrison County,
Ohio (Edwin Mellen Press). This book narrates the stories
of noteworthy people from a sparsely populated region of Ohio,
including an early advocate of women's rights, a female explorer,
statesmen, diplomats, writers, soldiers, and inventors. Beauregard
depicts how the locale produced talented people and argues for
confidence in an educated rural citizenry.
Jack
C. Ellis, AM'48, Life, Contributions, Influence
(Southern Illinois University Press). Ellis examines the Scottish
filmmaker's accomplishments in detail, probing Grierson's motivations
and personality and concluding that he, more than any other person,
was responsible for the documentary film as it developed in English-speaking
countries.
Berida
Ndambuki and Claire C. Robertson, AM'68, We Only
Come Here to Struggle: Stories from Berida's Life (Indiana
University Press). In this autobiography, Ndambuki-with Robertson's
help-relates her experiences as a Kenyan woman supporting 16 children
as a trader and retailer. Her life story encompasses British colonial
rule, national independence, and political and economic struggle.
