Adria P. Bernardi, AM'89, The Day Laid on the Altar (Middlebury College Press/University Press of New England). Winner of the 1999 Bakeless Literary Publication Prize for fiction, Bernardi's novel shows her characters-ranging from an unlettered shepherd to the painter Titian-struggling to make art, life, and wonder out of bleakness, plague, and hunger in 16th-century Italy.

Bruce Nortell, JD'71, Rimed Recipes: (Cooking in Seven Sages) (lendtroninc). Nortrell's prose and verse delve into law, medicine, and education to create a "cookbook on life."
