Right
mood, wrong caption
I
loved and related to David Forbes's quite accurate revisiting
of "boomer" heaven at the U of C of the late '60s. One
minor inaccuracy, however, is the small photo on page 29 captioned
"rallying cries to bring back organized football." Sorry-football
was not that important to U of C students in 1968. I believe the
speaker with the megaphone is Howie Machtinger of Columbia University
strike fame (April 1968) who, as an erstwhile graduate student
at U of C in early 1969, led the famous (to us) sit-in of the
Admin Building. He is exhorting his troops to be calm and steadfast.
(See microphones on lower left of photo-these belong to the Chicago
TV press corps-Howie knew how to attract the press!)
