On the Quads


Even a grizzled alum can revisit the thrill of the college-application process—it was a thrill, right?—through the cognitive gymnastics of pondering essay questions. The Chicago admissions office recently released its five essay topics for 2011–12 applicants, and they are, well, uncommon: “Find x,” is one, in full. Also: “Dog and cat. Coffee and tea. ... Everyone knows there are two types of people in the world. What are they?” That’s what passes for a multiple-choice question around here....

All the campus was a stage this August as members of the Dean’s Men acting troupe produced William Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Part of a summer series from the Office of the Reynolds Club and Student Activities, which included dance lessons, movie nights, and discounted sporting events, the play’s first two acts were held on Bartlett Quad before concluding at Hutchinson Courtyard....

Caroline Wooten, ‘12, joined a group of college students from around the country that spent the summer cycling through New England to raise awareness about what it calls a “planetary emergency.” The group pedaled its message June 6–August 8, trying to generate a sense of urgency about the environment. The students chronicled their mission on their blog, climatesummer.wordpress.com....

Brian Ashby, Ben Kolak, and Courtney Prokopas, all AB’06, codirected the Chicago Underground Film Festival’s award–winning documentary, Scrappers. The feature-length film follows metal scavengers Oscar and Otis as they scour Chicago’s alleys in their pickup trucks. Scrappers, which premiered in June at the festival, held at the Gene Siskel Film Center, won best documentary feature and the audience award....

Register him with the SEC and call him a hedge fund, because Jason Mudrick, AB’97, is about to get some sizable returns. Mudrick, the president and CEO of Mudrick Capital, was named one of New York magazine’s Foxes of Finance, one of 14 traders to earn such praise. (His photo is available here.)
