On the Quads


Ben Samuels-Kalow, ’12, helped seniors at Hyde Park Academy become published poets. Working for the Neighborhood Schools Program last year, Samuels-Kalow discussed Shakespearean sonnets with the students, who then wrote their own. The result was Statistics Can’t Write Poetry: Voices from the South Side, a collection of poetry and artwork. All 23 contributing students were accepted to four-year colleges, and profits from the book will help fund their educations. ...

Responding to increased demand, the Office of Undergraduate Housing assigned some transfer students to International House and first-years to Stony Island. Despite adding 30 beds in other residence halls, more space was necessary to accommodate applicants. In all there were about 50 additional first-years and ten more transfer students who applied for housing this year. ...

Katie Burkhart, ’14, became the College Council’s fourth and final first-year representative in an unprecedented tie-breaking special election. In the general election, with a record turnout of 671 voters, Burkhart and Angela Wang tied with 161 votes, the first time that had happened, fourth-year interim council chair Jason Cigan told the Maroon. Each candidate gave a five-minute speech and answered questions from the council, which includes four members from each class, before the tie-breaking votes were cast. ...

A Student Government pilot initiative is providing three newspapers to the campus community for free. The Collegiate Readership Program distributes the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and USA Today at the Reynolds Club, Bartlett Dining Commons, the Harris School, and Cobb Hall. ...

Third-year Julie Huang’s summer internship included writing about her two weeks aboard a 170-foot research ship—her first time on a boat—for Scientific American’s Expeditions blog. Huang worked for the Scripps Oceanographic Institution as part of a team studying the quality of light at different depths to learn about squid and their environment.
