president randel* Randel Wins Academic Leadership Award
Chicago President Don M. Randel has won one of the Carnegie Corporation of New York's three inaugural Academic Leadership Awards--$500,000 to be used in support of the institution's educational priorities. Northwestern's Henry Bienen, AM'62, PhD'66, and Carnegie Mellon's Jared Cohon were the other honorees:

* Chicago Alumni Enroll in Peace Corps at Record Pace
For the second year in a row, the University ranks No. 1 (among institutions with fewer than 5,000 undergraduates) in the number of alumni who volunteer for the Peace Corps. A total of 39 College alumni joined in 2004:

* Fossil Record Is No Shell Game
Chicago geophysicist Susan Kidwell's analysis of the marine bivalve fossil record, reported in the February 11 Science, rules out paleontologists' long-held suspicion that differences in shell toughness might distort the record and thus throw off researchers' conclusions about past life:
