Dreams in soap

Soap may be a commodity that most people use only for washing up, but entrants of the Student Activities Office’s annual soap-carving contest came to appreciate the cleanser as an artistic medium. Pamela Barrie, a graduate student in Medieval English, carved the winning entry—the unicorn pictured above—from a single bar of Ivory soap in winter 1977, according to the March 1, 1977, Chicago Maroon. As her prize, she took away the book Fabulous Beasts and Demons, donated by legendary Chicago bookseller Stuart Brent, X’40, founder of Stuart Brent Books.
