Chrissy Hu, ’11, and Kendra Higgins, ’12, won the 2009 NCAA Division III doubles championship. Hu and Higgins defeated a team from Pomona-Pitzer Colleges 6–1, 6–3, in the finals. They are the first Maroons to claim an individual NCAA Division III women’s tennis title.…

Third-year Claire Saperstein has received a $34,000 Beinecke Scholarship toward graduate study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Saperstein majors in both Fundamentals and Slavic Languages & Literature, with a minor in Near Eastern Languages & Civilization. She intends to study the connection between Persian and Russian literature as a graduate student.…

When Steve Saltirelli’s (‘10) satirical Maroon column in March about the demands of male leadership received a genuine response, he started an official group. Men in Power sparked controversy on campus about student funding and whether there is a need for such an organization....

Another new student group includes members willing to fight to the undeath. The Zombie Readiness Task Force became an official organization, complete with $5,500 in University funds. The money did not go directly to fight the scourge of the undead around Hyde Park, but instead to bring The Zombie Survival Guide author Max Brooks to campus.…

Hannah Alpert and Hannes Schimmelpfennig have been awarded Goldwater scholarships. Alpert, ’11, who studies mathematics, is completing research in graph theory. Schimmelpfennig, ’10, a physics major, spent last academic year studying at Cambridge. The scholarships provide $7,500 a year for the remainder of collegiate studies.…

A new collegiate fellowship, named in honor of mathematics professor Izaac Wirzup, who died in 2008, has been awarded to Jerry Lo, ’11. The fellowship goes to a mathematics student committed to improving education. Lo visits Chicago Public Schools weekly to work with students as part of a Polk Bros. Foundation program.
