90 College alumni—Grace Chan, AB’90, AM’90, writes: Hi, everyone! Looks like things have been quiet in the past few months. Please keep the news coming. There MUST be some exciting things happening out there! Fortunately, Derrick H. Smith, AB’90, hasn’t forgotten about us. He reports that he and Isabelle C. Lopez, a McGill grad, celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary on February 14. They also had a daughter, Chloe Susana Smith Lopez, on May 28, 1998. Derrick is a prosecutor for the state of Florida.

Other alumni news includes: Robert D. Lystad, JD’90, was elected to partner of Baker & Hostetler LLP in its Washington, DC office. He concentrates in litigation, with an emphasis on First Amendment matters. In June, James F. Perkaus, MBA’90, becomes a visiting fellow at the Washington, DC–based World Resources Institute, where he will continue research on international, legal, and financial instruments to manage global climate change. In 1997, he received a master’s of international law diplomacy from Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, where he is a Ph.D. candidate in international relations. Last summer, he spent four months as a visiting fellow at the International Academy of the Environment, based in Geneva. For the past two years, he has worked as a project consultant for the Chicago-based Environmental Financial Products Limited LLC. He can be reached at perkaus@neodot.com. 91 College alumni—Claudia Balica, AB’91, writes: Libby A. Christophersen, AB’91, played the female lead in the independent film Iceman and recently played Cathy in Wuthering Heights at Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. She lives in New York City. Charles M. Ellenbogen, AB’91, MAT’95, teaches English at Hume Fogg High School in Michigan and in November was awarded National Board Certification for Professional Teaching Standards in the early adolescence/English language arts category. He has been teaching in Nashville metro schools for four years. Laura Feinberg Silvian, SB’91, and David L. Silvian, AB’90, recently moved to Boston. Their first son, Benjamin Eli, was born August 24, 1998. Laura is a postdoc in biochemistry at Harvard Medical School and David is an attorney at Bingham, Dana LLP, where he practices estate planning. In December, Ronald C. Lee Jr., AB’91, received his doctorate in political science from Boston College. His dissertation was entitled “Democratic Justifications of Empire: Athens and America.” He is currently a visiting assistant professor in political theory and constitutional democracy at James Madison College of Michigan State University. John M. Dierking, AB’91, recently married Lisa Marino in California. Jihad I. Shoshara, AB’91, MD’96, and his wife, Sofia R. Shakir, AB’93, live in Skokie, IL, finishing their medical education. Jihad is in his last year of a pediatrics residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he has won the resident teacher of the year award two years in a row. He was also nominated to Northwestern’s chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha as a housestaff member. Virginia Navarrete Brooks, AB’91, and Brian P. Brooks, JD’94, recently returned to Washington, DC, after spending a year in Louisville, KY, where Virginia taught at the University of Louisville’s Louis D. Brandeis School of Law and Brian clerked for Danny J. Boggs, JD’68, in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Their son, Henry, was born November 1, 1997. Virginia has now joined Vinson & Elkins, LLP and Brian has returned to O’Melveny & Myers, LLP.

92 College alumni—Lesley F. Kim, AB’92, writes: It’s been a slow class news month to match the lazy feeling of summer. At least that’s my guess for why the e-mails and postcards from the Class of ’92 haven’t been coming in as fast and furiously these days. In any event, here’s some of what’s been going on: Victoria L. (“Viki”) Mosiman, AB’92, recently relocated from Chicago to Mountain View, CA. I’m sure she won’t be missing those Chicago winters. Correction to the February ’99 class notes: Jack Y. Chen, AB’92, not Jack Shen, was at the San Francisco young alumni happy hour. Jack works for KPMG in San Francisco. Sorry about the typo, Jack! Finally, bon voyage to Faye Steiner, AB’95, who moved to Paris in April. Your U of C buddies will miss you, but don’t be surprised if you find us on your doorstep looking to crash on your sofa.

93 College alumni—Norman Yung, AB’93, writes: Albert G. Chou, AB’93, and Kevin D. Fazendeiro, AB’95, have started writing a new book, to be titled How to Win at Pai-Gow Poker, inspired by their recent trip to Las Vegas in which they both won a princely sum. Joshua W. Grass, SB’93, married Holly Milton on New Year’s Eve in Boston. Joshua reports that they had a great time. Jason Hershberger, AB’93, was the best man and three other alumni attended the festivities. The couple went to Spain for the honeymoon, traveling from Madrid to Gibraltar. They live in Northampton, MA, where Joshua is finishing his Ph.D. and Holly works for a publishing company. Justin A. Nuccio, AB’93, is working as a consultant at Deloitte & Touche’s capital markets group in New York City, while also writing his Ph.D. dissertation in anthropology at Princeton University and serving as the music director/
organist of Union Church of Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, NY. Two years ago, he completed his dissertation research in Fez, Morocco, with the assistance of a Fulbright-IIE International Research grant. He married Houria Saghiri in Gibraltar in August 1997. They are living in Brooklyn.

Iverson, AM’93, of Evanston, IL, and his wife, Shari, began a two and a half year Mennonite Central Committee assignment in Whitesburg, KY, where he will serve as a community service worker. Iverson was formerly the director of information services for Catholic Charities of Chicago. The couple has three children, Andrea, Erin, and Jessica.

Other alumni news includes: The University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls appointed Kenneth R. Atkinson, MDV’94, who’s completing his Ph.D. in biblical studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, as an assistant professor of religion. He also signed a book contract with the Edwin Mellen Press to write a commentary on the Psalms of Solomon, the first English commentary in more than 100 years. Stephen M. Smith, MBA’94, and Susan L. Poarch, MBA’94, announce the November 4 birth of their first child, Kathryn Elizabeth Smith. They report that “Mother and baby are doing wonderfully, and Kathryn has now started to practice her laughter.” Smith is an associate director with Cambridge Management Consulting, a division of Cambridge Technology Partners, and Poarch is on leave from her consulting job with Allegiance Healthcare.

95 College alumni—Kathleen Abbott, AB’95, writes: Not only is Linda P. Vandaele, AB’95, finishing up her last year at the Pritzker School of Medicine, she married Steven J. DeCherrie, AB’92, on April 14 at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Linda and Steve had several alumni at their wedding, including bridesmaids Libby Nelsen Ryan, AB’95, and Cheryl K. Chang, AB’95, and groomsman James A. Holt, AB’93. After Linda graduates from Pritzker in June, she and Steve will be relocating to Boston, where Linda will begin her residency in internal medicine. Deepa Rao, AB’95, AM’96, sends congratulations to H. Alexis Economou, AB’95, and R. Andrew Pruitt, AB’96, who were wed in a beautiful candlelit ceremony in Bond Chapel on February 13. Stephanie T. Morris, AB’96, was a bridesmaid and Deepa was “usher and professional candle-lighter.” Two other U of C alumni were present. We all wish them the best of luck in their future life together.

96 College alumni—Asha Banker, AB’96, writes: Three years have passed since we graduated. What are you doing? Whether you are studying for a Ph.D. at the U of C or chasing icebergs in Antarctica, tell us what is going on in your life!

Thanh M. Tran, AB’96, was recently promoted to assistant vice president of the enterprise risk-management department of ABN AMRO Bank. Thanh tells us that this marks his third promotion in the two years he’s been with the firm. In addition, this autumn Thanh will be enrolling as a part-time GSB student, concentrating in finance. Young Song, AB’96, married Renee K. Wrona, AB’97, on February 21 at Bond Chapel. Young adds, “Our marriage was a blast and we are going to live the rest of our lives happily ever after.”

97 College alumni—Alpha Lillstrom, AB’97, writes: Joseph J. Chang, AB’97, works for KPMG in Chicago as a consultant, but is currently doing a stint in KPMG’s London office as an assistant manager. 98 College alumni—Elaine Chang, AB’98, writes: Back in March you would have found me crossing the Charles Bridge in Prague, lounging on a gondola in Venice, surveying the ruins of Rome, and dancing the night away in Barcelona. Two weeks in Europe certainly revived me from long work weeks. Got anything interesting? Keep the news coming! Samir S. Soneji, SB’98, lives with Naeem S. Merchant, AB’98, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Samir studies statistics at Columbia University and Naeem works in the downtown law firm of Clary, Gottlieb, Hamilton and Stern.
