SG president
Andy Hong, ’01, shares his views on College concerns.
Last spring, Andy Hong, a third-year biology concentrator, was
elected president of the Student Government, which holds the purse
strings for all Recognized Student Organizations, hosts events for
the student body, and represents student concerns to the administration.
Here’s his student-leader perspective on some current campus issues:
Campus master plan
We are working with administrators to create a committee
on converting Bartlett Gym into a student center and dining hall.
When the master plan was presented to SG, a lot of students were
really excited about it. Were going to be talking with the
SG representatives about projects like the re-landscaping of the
Midway.
Presidential search
Were going to be discussing with the selection committee
and with the Board of Trustees the qualities we feel we should be
looking for in a president. Were also going to be sending
out e-mails encouraging student involvement. We need to find someone
who has charisma and energy, who really communicates well with the
students, in addition to the presidents main jobs of getting
funding and shaping the University for the future.
Curriculum changes
Its going to be crucial this year for SG to take an
active role in working with academic groups looking at how changing
the core is affecting students. Our college affairs chair will work
with other groups to sponsor forums on education.
College alumni
Opening up lines of communication with the alumni is the
goal. Thats going to be one of the big hurdles because establishing
a network of communication is really hard. This school is so decentralized.
Alumni should be vocal in saying, Hey, this is how we feel,
weve taken a part of this place and we feel like its
a part of us, so wed like you to include us in it.B.B.
