UCHICAGO.EDU

In December 2001 the Magazine joined with the University of Chicago Alumni Association to create a monthly e-bulletin. Currently sent to 54,932 alumni, UCHICAGO.EDU offers links to University and alumni news and programming. If you would like to be added to the e-mail list, write uchicago-magazine@uchicago.edu.

Welcome to the June edition of UCHICAGO.EDU, a monthly e-bulletin bringing you online news about the University of Chicago and its larger community of alumni and friends.

Your June/05 University of Chicago Magazine is in the mail. It's also online at: http://magazine.uchicago.edu.

Here's a sampling from the June issue:

* Regenstein Library Gains in Stacks Appeal
The Joseph L. Regenstein Library is about to begin a $42 million expansion. At the project's June 2009 completion, the Reg will house more volumes than any other library in the United States. What's better, say researchers, none of the books will be stored off-site.

* Winning Streak Hits 19 Years
This year 28 of 42 Chicago applicants received Fulbright-Hays fellowships for doctoral-dissertation research abroad--more than any other school in the nation. It's the 19th year in a row the U of C has led the fellowship count:

Research at Chicago

* Speed Matters
A Chicago study overturns conventional theory in evolution, showing that the accumulation of genetic changes is not solely determined by natural selection, but that the speed at which new mutations arrive at a cell also plays a role:

* AgentCell to the Rescue
University and Argonne National Laboratory scientists have constructed a computer simulation to study a single-cell as it interacts with other cells and its environment. The AgentCell simulation may be used in cancer research, drug development, and countering bioterrorism:

* Cruise the Waterways of France
With Fontainebleau in the south, Giverny in the north, and Paris at its center, the Ile-de-France is bordered by four rivers. Cruise the "island" heart of France August 19-27 aboard the small, luxurious M.S. Anacoluthe with fellow alumni and Chicago professor Shadi Bartsch.
