Andy and Michael, in St. Paul, MN, where Miller is an internist

a Ph.D. candidate at the U of C, took time off from writing her
dissertation on human capital theory to shepherd into print a manuscript
begun by her late mother, Sara Tuvel Bernstein, a Romanian Jewish
survivor of the Nazi concentration camps. In “a moving afterword,”
as Publisher’s Weekly described it, Samuels muses on what role her
mother’s spirit may have played in her survival: “One of the qualities
that made my mother unusual, if not unique, was her ability to experience
real, uninhibited laughter, a capacity for pleasure and joy. “ The
book received positive reviews in Publisher’s Weekly, Kirkus
Reviews, and Library Journal.

really thought we would marry a fellow U of C alum, Brad Gupta,

got engaged, bought a house, and got married on September 7, 1997—exactly
one whirlwind year later. We were married in Falls Church, VA, in
a traditional Hindu ceremony, with all the trimmings, and with 463
guests. We’re still not done with all the celebrating, as Brad’s
parents are hosting another reception in Seattle in October. After
a two-week honeymoon on the Amalfi coast of Italy, Brad and I are
back in Chicago getting back into the swing of things.” Brad works
in the aircraft leasing industry as director of aviation marketing

many Class of ’87 members are married to U of C alumni. If you are,

like, whether you met at the U of C or after graduation), and I’ll
report the results in a future column.

celebrated the birth of their first child, Jack William, last March.

I would love to hear from my friends, especially housemates from
Vincent House. Please write!” Thuong Tri Nguyen, AB’87, attends
law school at the University of Minnesota. He would like to hear
from classmates (nguy0656@tc.umn.edu).
