1990's

90 College alumni—Grace Chan, AB’90, AM’90, writes: Samer M. Ali, AB’90, passed his qualifying examinations and achieved Ph.D. candidacy in Near Eastern languages and cultures at Indiana University. He’ll be spending a year on a Fulbright-Hays grant to study medieval Arabic manuscripts in Egypt, Germany, and Spain. Brett J. Best, AB’90, married Gwen M. Daley, AB’90, in June 1990 at Bond Chapel with a reception at the Plaza Club. Since leaving the Chicago area, Brett and Gwen—who’s ABD in paleontology at Virginia Tech—have both fallen in love with minor-league ice hockey, and Gwen has turned that into a passion for running their local team’s official Web site. After a successful 10-year career as a sports journalist, including a Virginia Press Association award for a May 1996 column, Brett decided to put his U of C experience in track to good use and go back to the participation side of athletics. He began a career as an assistant track and field coach at Virginia Tech in January and thinks he may be the only U of C alum coaching at an NCAA Division I institution. Jessica A. Kidd, AB’90, is in Britain doing an equine-surgery residency. Her new address is Myrtle Cottage, Stock Lane, Langford, Bristol BS40 5EU, England, and her phone number is 011 44-1934-852-541; e-mail address is kiddvet@hotmail.com. She would be glad to hear from any U of C alumni in the area. Mickey Y. Kim, AB’90, has a new address: 1535 Windy Hill Drive, Northbrook, IL 60062. Art M. Lee, AB’90, is between jobs. Classmates are encouraged to write him at 4239 Moore St., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033. After graduation, Robbyn T. Lewis, AB’90, served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger, West Africa. Providing health education for mothers and children in a remote area, she had to learn the Zarma language. After the Peace Corps, she did graduate work in medicine and biology, but eventually earned her master’s in public health from Columbia University. Today, she is a clinical researcher for Johns Hopkins University in charge of a tuberculosis project in Haiti, where she lives and works full time and is adding Haitian Creole to her collection of languages. Wai Kong (“Brian”) Li, AB’90, is slaving away in Hong Kong and would like any classmates who happen to be there to drop him a line.

William E. McGee, Jr., AB’90, and wife Lynn both turned 30 this year. Their older daughter, Emma, started kindergarten and their younger daughter, Hannah, is 2. Will just earned his Type 9 teaching certificate for English and is working on his M.Ed. He also had a short story published this fall in the Notre Dame Review. Tammie Miller, AB’90, MBA’94, is director of business development and investor relations for Blue Cross Blue Shield United of Wisconsin. Her daughter, Allison Grace Aprahamian, was born in June 1997 and is now a happy and active 1-year-old. Tammie and her husband, Ed Aprahamian, own a thriving business in Milwaukee. She is still working with collegiates through Alpha Omicron Pi at the U of C and loving it. Erika Anderson Ono, AB’90, lives in State College, PA, with her husband, Ken Ono, AB’89, and their daughter, Aspen. Ken teaches at Penn State and Erika will finish her master’s at Penn and begin practicing as a certified nurse-midwife. Elisabeth Ann Hollister Sandberg, AB’90, AM’90, PhD’95, and Warren S. Sandberg, PhD’91, MD’94, were married in October 1993, and their son, Aiden Jameson, was born in May 1998. After finishing a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard, Elisabeth began a tenure-track position in the psychology department of Suffolk University in Boston. Warren has finished his residency in anesthesia and critical care at Massachusetts General Hospital and has joined its anesthesia faculty. They live in a Boston suburb, where they are furiously renovating their 108-year-old Victorian house. Gurjot K. Sidhu-Gandhi, AB’90, MBA’93, married Samir A. Gandhi, AB’90, and worked in management consulting until this past year, when she started her own Internet strategy consulting business. Samir has been at Brown and Wood as an attorney since completing his J.D. at George Washington University in 1993. Their son, Jivan, 3, is, according to Gurjot, “the sunshine of our lives.”

Losekamp, AB’91, and Michelle Crafton Losekamp, AB’92, announce the October 29 birth of daughter Elaine Marie. They report that “big sister Katherine does an excellent job helping out.” In July, Craig will complete a family-practice residency in Dayton, OH, and in August, will join a small group of family doctors in Fairfield, OH. Giancarlo Nardini, AB’91, and his brother have recently taken over their family restaurant, Club Lago, in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. Giancarlo welcomes any alums to the Lago to “help keep the conversations interesting.” He sends a special acknowledgement to Alexander D. Hoehn-Saric, AB’91, and Loren A. They have “two children, Yoshi and Meeko—both puppies yet.” Christine A. Dannhausen-Brun, AB’91, and Christian Dannhausen-Brun, SB’92, welcomed twins Emma Christine and Jacob Henry into the family on July 9. The twins had “a bumpy entrance into the world, but are now doing great and keeping both mom and dad on their toes.” Much to Christine’s relief, they report, Christian completed his surgery internship and the grueling call schedule at the University of Maryland just in time to help with Emma and Jacob. 95 College alumni—Kathleen Abbott, AB’95, writes: For all you investment bankers who sometimes feel like trying something a little different...Tanya L. Garrett, AB’95, writes that Samuel S. Chong, AB’95, is taking a break from investment banking to follow his true love, ballet dancing. Having studied dance from a young age, he is an accomplished ballet dancer and choreographer. Most recently, he completed a dance adaptation of Free Willy for a local ballet school for children. He is also marketing the piece and auditioning for dance troupes in the Chicago area. I am definitely happy that he is following his heart and taking chances. I’m sure that Sam would enjoy the support of his fellow U of C alums. Those who are interested should call Sam to find out about his next recital. Katherine Norem, AB’95, writes, “Konnichiwa! I remember learning as a child that if I dug a hole from my backyard and continued straight through the earth and came out the other side, I would find myself in the Indian Ocean. So it follows that anyone living in India deserves the ‘Farthest from Chicago’ award. But I live in Japan, and this has to count for at least an honorable mention. I’m teaching English conversation in a suburb of Nagoya and have discovered that I really miss snow (and English conversation!). I’ll be home soon.” Congratulations to Hyeyoung Bang-Thompson, AB’95, and Gregory A. Thompson, AB’94, who were married on August 7. Groomsmen included best man Damian W. Geppert, AB’95, has definitely been keeping up with alumni relations! During the past year, she worked at Colliers Cauble & Co., a commercial real-estate brokerage in Atlanta, where, she writes, she “was fortunate enough to run into Carlton W. Basmajian, AB’96, at an alumni event at Emory in February. I am glad to report that Carlton has begun graduate studies in urban planning at Georgia Tech this past fall. Moreover, I am happy to report that I recently returned to the Windy City to work for the Field Museum of Natural History as events coordinator for institutional advancement. I have also been in regular contact with Bridget A.
