Under Observation: Study Group Reconsiders Future Use of Yerkes
After Williams Bay, Wisconsin, residents opposed a proposal to
develop 45 acres near the University-owned observatory in an arrangement
that would have preserved the historic observatory and its telescopes

Getting the Word Out: New Vice President for Communications
President Robert J. Zimmer has named Julie A. Peterson as Chicago’s
vice president for communications. Peterson, currently interim vice
president for communications at the University of Michigan, begins
her duties July 1 and will be responsible for developing a strategic
communications plan to strengthen media relations and communicate the
University's achievements locally, nationally, and internationally:

For Kids Who Survive Cancer, the Risks are Still High
Childhood cancer survivors are nine times as likely as the general
population to develop a sarcoma—a cancer of connective or supportive
tissue such as bone, fat, or muscle. That's according to the Childhood
Cancer Survivor Study, which, with data from more than 14,000 childhood
cancer survivors treated between 1970 and 1986, is believed to be the
largest of its kind to date. Tara Henderson, a pediatric oncologist
at the Comer Children's Hospital, led a study investigating the risk
factors associated with developing second sarcomas:

What We Have, Dear, is a Failure to Communicate
Some of people’s biggest problems with communication occur
when sharing new information with people they know well. So says
Chicago psychology professor Boaz Keysar in an article in the current
issue of Cognitive Science. Because they already share a lot of
common knowledge, people often use short, ambiguous messages in
talking with spouses or coworkers, unintentionally creating misunderstandings:
