After Williams Bay, Wisconsin, residents opposed a proposal to develop 45 acres near the University-owned observatory in an arrangement that would have preserved the historic observatory and its telescopes as an education center, the observatory’s future is back on the drawing board:

* For Kids Who Survive Cancer, the Risks are Still High
Childhood cancer survivors are nine times as likely as the general population to develop a sarcoma—a cancer of connective or supportive tissue such as bone, fat, or muscle. That's according to the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, which, with data from more than 14,000 childhood cancer survivors treated between 1970 and 1986, is believed to be the largest of its kind to date. Tara Henderson, a pediatric oncologist at the Comer Children's Hospital, led a study investigating the risk factors associated with developing second sarcomas:

* What We Have, Dear, is a Failure to Communicate
Some of people’s biggest problems with communication occur when sharing new information with people they know well. So says Chicago psychology professor Boaz Keysar in an article in the current issue of Cognitive Science. Because they already share a lot of common knowledge, people often use short, ambiguous messages in talking with spouses or coworkers, unintentionally creating misunderstandings:

* Travel in Mind for Summer and Fall
There’s still time to check your vacation calendar against the list of alumni travel offerings for 2007 and choose a faculty-led study trip to suit your interests. Slots remain open on summer and fall trips to the Mediterranean, Black Sea, China and Tibet, Tuscany, Poland, and the Galapagos:

* Got Music?
Responding to the lack of easy access to Chicago fight songs and other traditional maroon tunes, the Chicago Men’s A Cappella (a registered student organization on campus) trekked through a February blizzard to Bond Chapel, where they taped Songs of Chicago for your entertainment:
