The glasses at Bartlett Dining Commons hold ten ounces more than their six-ounce cousins in other cafeterias. Maybe that's why more than 800 of an initial stock of 1,080 disappeared within eight weeks of Bartlett's opening. But it doesn't explain why the missing-in-action list also includes 475 coffee mugs, 1,576 cereal bowls, 1,200 forks, 480 knives, and 960 spoons-more than was carried away all last year from the other three dining halls.

Student Government president Ben Aderson, '02, speculated in the Maroon that the theft is a silent protest against high prices: the first-year meal plan costs $3,634, up 3 percent from last year. The Maroon also noted that the dining hall has had a problem with nonpaying students sneaking in-and taking out.
