With much of the world needing reconstruction, Chicago undergrads have found ways to help people living far from Hyde Park. Student music and improvisational groups, along with individual performers, held a benefit concert in the C-Shop early winter quarter to aid victims of the recent Indian Ocean tsunami. The Maroon reports that, through donation boxes and a bake sale, the event raised $1,058....
Students also contributed to the international Books for Baghdad project, which seeks to replenish Baghdad University’s library and thus increase educational opportunities in war-torn Iraq. In all 20 boxes of books, the Maroon reports, were shipped from the University to Baghdad....
In what might be seen as a move to promote salon-style discussions or a result of society’s Starbucksification, a self-serve, push-button cappuccino, latte, and espresso machine came fall quarter to the Bartlett Dining Commons. Providing decaf and regular brews at breakfast and dinner, says Bartlett executive chef Mynor Ribera, the device arrived after several students requested it on Bartlett’s suggestion forms....
Though amateur blogs and traditional print media have sometimes had antagonistic relationships, that isn’t the case at the Maroon. “Viewpoints” editor George Anesi, ’06, has decided to feature op-ed–length samples of various blogs written by Chicago students and faculty. Several U of C sites, Anesi says, “are consistently linked to and referenced by the nation's top blogs,” and “some are among the most well-known blogs...in their own right.”....
At the request of his editors, third-year Joshua Steinman has updated his U of C installment of the College Prowler series, college guidebooks that offer student-written accounts of the social life and atmosphere at various schools. The Chicago Tribune reported that Steinman’s original College entry was deemed insufficiently critical by College Prowler editors. “No one ever likes to look negatively,” Steinman told the Tribune, “at something they love.”
