OTHERS ON THE GROUND
I just finished reading “War Stories” and was surprised to see that you only mentioned a select few alumni. Here are a couple of alumni you ignored.
I spent 11 months in Baghdad (June 2003 through April 2004), serving in an Illinois National Guard Signal Unit as a platoon leader. My unit served as the master switch in the largest tactical network ever built by the U.S. Army, providing a communications link for all four military branches and more than 33 different coalition forces.
Omar Altalib, AM’93, PhD’04, worked at the Coalition Provisional Authority. He was working with an Islamic charity to help revamp the elementary-education system in Iraq. Part of his job involved performing field visits to remote schools.
