“What’s Your Line?” Contest Winner

“Too much time is spent cleaning small windows.”

With that bit of philosophy, William H. Hoffman, MBA’63, of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, won the Magazine’s October/05 “Lite of the Mind” caption contest. Close behind was George E. Clark, AM’89, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, who had President Randel consider an uncertain future: “I wonder if the Mellon Foundation has Shake Day?”

The staff also laughed, albeit ruefully, at this one-liner from Peter Crane, AB’79, of Aldan, Pennsylvania: “I wonder what the lawsuit from the New Yorker will cost us.” Many of the 100-plus entries fell into one of three genres: variations on the University motto (“Crescat Scientia Curriculum Vitae Excolatur”), fruity puns (“And to close my act, I’ll do ‘Mellon-choly Baby.’”), and silver linings: (“Ah! Life without faculty.”). Bill Hoffman gets a U of C sweatshirt and a copy of the cartoon signed by artist Jessica Abel, AB’91, and the other contestants get our thanks.—M.R.Y.
