Nina Berman, AB’82, first photographed Iraq War veteran Ty Ziegel in 2006. Severely burned after a suicide bomber attacked his truck, Ziegel, then 24, was in a coma for weeks, and his longtime girlfriend, Renee Kline, helped nurse him back to health. Berman, a photojournalist who had been following wounded soldiers for several years and was having trouble getting magazines interested in her work, was hired by People to photograph Ziegel and Kline before and during their October 2006 wedding. See “Wedding Gaze.”
