The Class of 1934 celebrates its 65th reunion on June 4-6, 1999.

May 13, Theodore Kahan, SB'35, competed in the Philadelphia
Senior Games at LaSalle University in the 85-89 age group. He finished
first in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes; the 4 x 50-meter
relay; the 1,600-meter walk; the softball throw; singles tennis;
and stationary bike riding. His eight first-place finishes were
the most of any competitor. During the week of July 13, he competed
in the 85-89 age group at the Pennsylvania Senior Games at Shippensberg
University. Kahan won gold medals in singles and doubles tennis,
the 100-meter run, and the football throw. He took silver medals
in the 400-meter run, the 200-meter run, and the long jump, and
also won a bronze in the softball throw.

July marked the 20th anniversary of the International School of
Astrophysics founded by Maurice M. Shapiro, SB'36, SM'40,
PhD'42, who continues to direct the school. U of C faculty who lectured
there include John A. Simpson Jr., Eugene Parker, and the late David
N. Schramm.

Saul Bellow, X'39, was elected to the American Philosophical
Society in April.
