* Rhodes to Success
Two recent graduates and a fourth-year student in the College are among 32 American men and women chosen as Rhodes Scholars this year:

* Going Up: Applications to the College
When Harvard and Princeton dropped their early-admission programs this year, Chicago expected the number of high-school students applying via the College's non-binding early action program to go up. But, reports the Chicago Tribune, it didn't expect a 45-percent increase:

Amadou Cisse, a 29-year-old chemistry graduate student from Senegal, was walking to his off-campus apartment when he was fatally shot on November 19. The shooting was the first time a student has died as the result of violent crime on or near campus since 1977. For a full report on the incident, and its aftermath:

* Made in America: New Center to Study American Culture
A multimillion-dollar gift from Karla Scherer, AM'99, will fund the Humanities Division's new center for the study of American culture. Scherer's gift will support faculty and graduate student research, endow a professorship, and showcase the study of American culture through public conferences and symposia:

* This Sauropod Knew How to Suck It Up
In mid-November Chicago paleontologist and National Geographic explorer-in-residence Paul Sereno unveiled a 110 million-year-old dinosaur found in the Sahara in 1999. Known as Nigersaurus taquet, the plant-eating dinosaur had a mouth that worked like a vacuum cleaner:

* Where Cosmic Rays Come From
Still under construction, the Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory--an international collaboration begun in the early 1990s by Chicago's James Cronin, SM'53, PhD'55, and Alan Watson of the University of Leeds--has produced its first major discovery, tracing high-energy cosmic rays to the cores of nearby galaxies:
