Chicago's
balance sheet
How did the U of C earn and
spend its money last year? No surprises here: more than
half of Chicago's income is spent on teaching and research.
The faculty helps pay its own way, bringing in the largest
chunk of revenue in government grants and contracts (mostly
to the Biological Sciences Division). Still, unlike many
of its peers, Chicago depends heavily on tuition checks—its
second-largest income source—to cover its expenses.
