Emergency room visits to the University Hospitals during the 2001–02 academic year: 76,500

Liver transplants: 35

Burn-unit patients: 391

Heart transplants in 2002: 28

Colonoscopies: 4,068

Tonsillectomies (approximate): 300

Births: 3,045

Premature infants with extremely low birth weight (less than two pounds) admitted annually to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): 120

Portion of all such U.S. preemies cared for at the NICU: 0.5%

Weight-loss surgeries performed in 2002: 187

Average Body Mass Index (BMI) of weight-loss surgery patients: 55

“Normal” BMI: 18–24.9

“Morbidly obese” BMI: 40+
