The great outdoors America’s favorite pastime notwithstanding, photographer Lloyd DeGrane found that some University students spend their hours in the sun pursuing less-traditional seasonal sports. From small-screen heroes to miniboat racers, from charity workers to circus performers, students all over campus were tumbling outdoors to balance their academic feats with some creative recreation. Though spring was a long time coming, when the sun did appear students were quick to take advantage. After all, in Chicago you’ve got to get your sun while it’s hot. —A.L.M.
