AT THE TOP: SOCIAL SCIENCES DEAN
John Mark Hansen, a leading scholar
of American politics, will return to the University as dean of the Social Sciences
Division. Hansen, currently a professor at Harvard, begins a five-year term as
dean on July 1.

AT THE TOP: CFO
Donald Julian Reaves joins the U of C as vice president for administration and
CFO on August 15. The executive vice president and CFO at Brown University since
1993, Reaves will be responsible for Chicago's fiscal and administrative operations.

Changes
in the College's general-education courses in civilization studies, to be introduced

ART APPRECIATION: ECONOMIST LOOKS AT THE AVANT-GARDE
In his new book, "Outside the Lines: Patterns of Creativity in Modern Art,"
economics professor David W. Galenson uses statistical methods to analyze avant-garde
painting--"treating aesthetic innovations as...a function of the labor market

QUARTET
OF GUGGENHEIMS SUPPORT FACULTY PROJECTS
Four U of C faculty are among 184 artists, scholars, and scientists receiving
2002 Guggenheim fellowships: Andrew Abbott, AM'75, PhD'82, chair and the Gustavus
F. and Ann M. Swift distinguished service professor in sociology; Susan Gal, chair
and professor in anthropology; Jonathan Rosner, professor in physics; and Alison
Winter, AB'87, associate professor in history. To read about the research their

ALUMNI DIRECTORY: UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION
This month Chicago alumni
have a chance to update contact information for a new alumni directory, to be
published in spring 2003. A questionnaire is in the mail but if you prefer to
review your information electronically, go to the directory's secure Web site--where
you'll need to enter your alumni ID number and last name. If you don't know your
alumni ID number, it appears on the mailed questionnaire. Or call 800/955-0065.

Alumni from the graduate divisions are invited to share their opinions about Alumni
