clusters of outstanding new faculty, focusing on the most promising areas of research
and treatment. http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/02/020605.pritzker.shtml

RESEARCH
AT CHICAGO
SURVIVING A MASS EXTINCTION DOESN'T ENSURE...SURVIVAL
A significant number of organisms that survived Earth's five greatest mass extinctions
went on to lose the evolutionary game. So says a new study by Chicago's David
Jablonski, citing evidence from paleontological literature and his own work on
the aftermath of mass extinction at the end of the Mesozoic Era.
http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/02/020610.jablonski.shtml UPDATE
FROM THE GENETIC TWILIGHT ZONE
What is the genetic basis for evolutionary change? What forces cause different
species to evolve? Chicago evolutionary biologist Chung-i Wu believes that natural
selection plays a major role even at the genetic level and, in competitive environments,
actually speeds up.
