* TRUSTEES APPROVE
$21 MILLION I-HOUSE RENOVATION
Reaffirming the central role of International House in the
life of the University, on April 10 Chicago's trustees approved
a $21 million budget to renovate the neo-Gothic building's
exterior, systems, and bedrooms. Work on renovating I-House's
facilities--and revitalizing its image--is already well
under way.

* CHICAGO ECONOMIST
WINS JOHN BATES CLARK MEDAL
Steven Levitt, a microeconomist who studies the economics
of crime and urban areas, has won one of the highest honors
bestowed on an economist under 40, the John Bates Clark
Medal. "Provocative subject matter," notes the
April 26 New York Times, "has given Professor Levitt
a higher public profile than most academics."

RESEARCH
AT CHICAGO
* LIFE BEGINS @
26
Forget turning 21. A new survey by the National Opinion
Research Center finds that most Americans think people need
to be 26 to be considered grown-up. The survey, sponsored
by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, asked
respondents to rate seven steps toward adulthood--from full-time
employment to parenthood. The most-valued step: completing
one's education.

* DESPERATELY SEEKING
IRAQI ANTIQUITIES
The looting of Baghdad's National Museum hit archaeologists
at Chicago's Oriental Institute hard: over the years thousands
of items excavated by U of C researchers had gone to the
museum. The April 19 Chicago Sun-Times described the OI's
"desperate attempt" to recreate the National Museum's
inventory through an online database. http://www-news.uchicago.edu/citations/03/030419.scholars.html
