Welcome to the JULY edition of UCHICAGO.EDU, a monthly e-bulletin bringing you online news about the University of Chicago and its larger community of alumni and friends.

CHICAGO IN THE NEWS

* THE SCOOP ON SEYMOUR HERSH
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh, AB'58, whose New Yorker stories uncovered details of torture at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison came to I-House In June to discuss the role of investigative journalism in a democracy. To read a Chicago Tribune profile of Hersh, go to:

* PORTRAIT OF THE DOCTOR AS A VERY YOUNG MAN
At the age of 13, Sho Yano completed his first year at Pritzker School of Medicine--one of ten students in Chicago's combined MD/PhD program. A June 27 Chicago Tribune Magazine cover story chronicled his progress:

RESEARCH AT CHICAGO

* BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO SIDS RESEARCH
In the July 8 Neuron, a group of Chicago researchers describe what may be a crucial clue to understanding--and eliminating--sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). A malfunction in a set of respiratory pacemakers could be the cellular mechanism that triggers SIDS, the leading cause of post-neonatal mortality in the United States:

* DUST COLLECTOR READY TO SWEEP THROUGH SATURN'S RINGS
After six years and two-billion miles aboard NASA's Cassini spacecraft, the High Rate Detector instrument built by Chicago scientists will soon begin to study Saturnian dust and its interactions with the planet's rings, moons, and magnetosphere:

FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

* THIS YEAR'S ALUMNI AWARD WINNERS--AND HOW TO NOMINATE NEXT YEAR'S
Seventeen Chicago alumni were recognized during the June 5 Alumni Convocation--part of this year's Alumni Weekend--for their professional achievements, service to society, and volunteer efforts on behalf of the University. Two faculty members were also honored for their contributions to the campus community. Read about the winners and their accomplishments:

Help the Alumni Association recognize achievement and outstanding service on the part of Chicago alumni by making nominations for the 2005 awards. Nominations are due October 15, 2004, and winners will be honored during the 2005 Alumni Weekend. Online nomination forms are available at:

* SUMMER FUN (AND LEARNING) FOR KIDS
If your children complain, "There's nothing to do," point them to these entertaining (and educational) Web sites:

The David and Alfred Smart Museum's SmART Kids help kids see art in new ways--learn the language, visit an artist's studio, and unravel the history of selected works.

The Oriental Institute's Kids' Corner offers interactive games that let kids decipher inscriptions, prepare a mummy for burial, and learn about an ancient Egyptian artwork.

* MEDICAL INSURANCE BRIDGES THE GAP
Are you between school and job--or job and job--and therefore between insurance plans? The Alumni Association sponsors short-term medical insurance for periods of 31 to 185 days. For more information about either short-term medical or life insurance, call Meyer and Associates at 800/635-7801, e-mail info@meyerandassoc.com, or go to:
