A different drum

Looking for students who’ve gotta make their own kind of melody, photographer Lloyd DeGrane found a fair number who take music with them wherever they go, downloading personal compilations to iPods for easy, private listening in dorm or library. Using more traditional instruments, some musicians spend hours perfecting their interpretations of a composer’s work; others prefer to create original scores. Then there are those free spirits who make fun their leitmotif, puttin’ on the glitz or crooning silly little love songs. Play on.—M.R.Y.
