CHICAGO NEWS

* UNIVERSITY FILES AMICUS BRIEF IN SUPREME COURT ADMISSIONS CASES
Chicago has joined seven other leading private universities in urging the U.S. Supreme Court to preserve the ability of colleges and universities to consider race as one of many factors in their admissions processes, filing a "friend of the court" brief in two cases pending before the Court. To learn more and to read the brief, go to:
http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/03/030218.amicus.shtml

* PROGRAMS BENEFIT CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS
Two new programs--one offering full-tuition scholarships to 20 graduates of the city's public school system, the other bringing 150-200 talented high-school students to campus for enrichment activities, cultural events, college counseling, and courses--were announced at a March 6 press conference. For details:

RESEARCH AT CHICAGO

* EXTRA DIMENSIONS--THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE
The concept of extra dimensions, long considered the stuff of nonsense and science fiction, may soon help solve problems in particle physics, cosmology, and gravitational physicists. For more on a report from Chicago physicists, delivered at a recent American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting, go to:
http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/030306/dimensions.shtml

* AN ASPIRIN A DAY KEEPS POLYPS AWAY
Taking one aspirin a day can prevent the development of precancerous polyps in patients at increased risk for colorectal cancer, according to a study by Chicago researchers and colleagues in the March 6 New England Journal of medicine. For more on the three-year study, go to:
http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/030306/aspirin.shtml

NEWS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

* NEW LOOK AND FEEL FOR THE ALUMNI WEB SITE
Check out the redesigned Alumni Web site. With easier navigation and lots of new features, it's a snap (or a click) to connect with University events and programs--and to catch up with friends from your days on campus. Go to:
http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/aa.html

* PLATO'S APOLOGY--JOIN AN ONLINE DISCUSSION
Live today, Chicago's alumni community begins a consideration of Plato's Apology of Socrates. Visit the new discussion Web site for links to a modern translation by Professor James Redfield, essays by Professors Herman Sinaiko and Jonathan Z. Smith, images, audio, discussion questions, and an alumni discussion group where you can enter the conversation:
http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/apology.html

* VOLUNTEER TO BE A CAREER CONTACT
Share your professional, academic, and volunteer experiences and insights. The online Alumni Careers Network database is made up of alumni contacts who help students and alumni learn more about a profession, institution, or activity. Connections take place via phone conversations, e-mail, written correspondence, or in-person meetings. To join the 4,000-plus alumni who volunteer the benefit of their real-world expertise, go to:
