Welcome to the JUNE edition of UCHICAGO.EDU,
a monthly e-bulletin bringing you news about the University
of Chicago and its larger community of alumni and friends.
In this e-bulletin we offer links to
the latest U of C Magazine and other online news from Chicago.
But first, a word on behalf of our sponsor--
IT"S NOT TOO LATE to make a gift
to this year's Annual Funds. The Annual Funds help underwrite
student aid and fellowships, faculty research, books and
resources for the libraries, and the day-to-day costs of
operating the University of Chicago. Deadline for participation
in the 2003 Annual Fund is June 30. For details on how to
give: http://chicagoinitiative.uchicago.edu/help/make_gift.shtml

RESEARCH
AT CHICAGO
* "PULL OF
THE RECENT" THEORY LOSES PULL
The apparent increase in marine diversity over the last
50 million to 100 million years is real and not just a false
reading--known as "the pull of the recent"--produced
by inconsistencies in the fossil record. Chicago's David
Jablonski led a team of paleontologists whose findings,
reported in the May 16 Science, may provide a better understanding
of the future of global diversity. http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/03/030515.jablonski.shtml
* MARS MISSONS
HAVE CHICAGO CONNECTIONS
Chicago physicist Thanasis Economou plays a role in three
missions to Mars this month, one launched by the European
Space Agency and two by NASA: http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/03/030605.mars.shtml
