RESEARCH
AT CHICAGO
* NOT-SO-RANDOM
ACTS OF KINDNESS
In the nation's first-ever survey of altruism and empathy,
the National Opinion Research Center has found that the
strongest determinant of how often Americans help others
is religiousness: people who never attend religious services
perform an average of 96 altruistic acts a year, compared
to an average of 128 for those who attend weekly religious
services. http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/03/030725.altruism.shtml
* RECESSION'S SILVER
LINING: FEWER PARTICULATE CLOUDS
Examining a sharp reduction in manufacturing and a corresponding
drop in particulate pollution during the 1981-82 recession,
Chicago economist Michael Greenstone and a colleague at
the University of California, Berkeley, found evidence that
the improved air quality resulted in a decrease in infant
deaths. http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/03/particles/
