Here's a sampling from the AUGUST issue:

COVER STORY

* MOMENT OF DECISION
George Chauncey has spent a fair portion of his life fighting for civil liberties. His latest weapon: historical scholarship. http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0308/features/index.shtml

ALSO IN THE AUGUST MAGAZINE

* THE WEEDS OF CHANGE
Focusing on a simple mustard plant, Daphne Preuss is speeding crop improvement--and perhaps making medical breakthroughs. http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0308/features/weeds.shtml

* THE CMS SYNDROME
In its second century and 15th edition The Chicago Manual of Style continues to lay down the rules for wordsmiths. With style. http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0308/features/cms.shtml

CHICAGO IN THE NEWS

* COSMIC HONOR FOR CHICAGO PHYSICIST
Eugene Parker--the S. Chandrasekhar distinguished service professor emeritus in physics and astronomy & astrophysics--has been awarded the 2003 Kyoto Prize for Lifetime Achievements in Basic Science. Given by Japan's Inamori Foundation, the $400,000 prize recognizes Parker's work in elucidating the solar wind and other cosmic phenomena.

*ECONOMIST STEVEN LEVITT: NOT YOUR FATHER'S CHICAGO SCHOOL
In "The Probability that a Real-Estate Agent is Cheating You (and Other Riddles of Modern Life)" the New York Times Sunday Magazine profiles Chicago economics professor Steven Levitt, an award-winning researcher who "tends to see things differently than the average person. Differently, too, than the average economist."

RESEARCH AT CHICAGO

* NOT-SO-RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS
In the nation's first-ever survey of altruism and empathy, the National Opinion Research Center has found that the strongest determinant of how often Americans help others is religiousness: people who never attend religious services perform an average of 96 altruistic acts a year, compared to an average of 128 for those who attend weekly religious services. http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/03/030725.altruism.shtml

* RECESSION'S SILVER LINING: FEWER PARTICULATE CLOUDS
Examining a sharp reduction in manufacturing and a corresponding drop in particulate pollution during the 1981-82 recession, Chicago economist Michael Greenstone and a colleague at the University of California, Berkeley, found evidence that the improved air quality resulted in a decrease in infant deaths. http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/03/particles/
