STUDY LATER: NEW COLLEGE PREPAYMENT PLAN
Chicago is one of 220 private colleges participating
in the first national prepaid tuition savings plan
that lets parents prepay all or part of tomorrow's
college tuition at a cost slightly below current prices.

* GLOBUS
GRID PROJECT GOES GLOBAL
The Globus Project--a grid software group founded
in 1995 by Argonne National Laboratory, the USC Information
Sciences Institute, and Chicago to share computing
equipment across organizations and regions--has two
new European partners and a new name: Global Alliance.
The move, says the September 2 New York Times, is
aimed at making grid technology "more business-friendly."

* ON BIODEFENSE:
CHICAGO TO STUDY EMERGING DISEASES
The University is the lead institution in a collaboration
of 14 Midwestern institutions selected by the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
as one of eight Regional Centers for Excellence (RCE)
for biodefense and emerging infectious-disease research.
With a five-year, $35 million NIAID grant, the Midwestern
RCE will involve more than 300 scientists from a range

BREAST CANCER STRIKE BLACK WOMEN EARLIER, HARDER?
That's the question SSA associate professor Sarah
Gehlert, psychology professor Martha McClintock, and
a team of social workers, psychologists, physicians,
and molecular geneticists in Chicago and Nigeria hope
to answer with the aid of a five-year, $9.7 million

RISING IN 10 U.S. CITIES
Since 1999 young alumni across the country have marked
the start of the academic year on the quads by gathering
for refreshments, good conversation, and lots of relaxed
networking in their own cities. On October 2 and 3
young alumni in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver,
Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San
Francisco, and Washington, D.C., will celebrate Phoenixphest

ALUMNI SPENT THEIR SUMMER VACATION
In July one group of Chicago alumni toured Moscow
and St. Petersburg and spent a week cruising the waterway
between the two cities, visiting some sites accessible
only by water. In August another group explored Ireland's
west coast in the company of a glorious raconteur
whose father was Ireland's fourth president. To view

10-11 HOMECOMING HIGHLIGHTS ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
This year's Homecoming festivities feature two special
events: the dedication of the new Ratner Athletics
Center and the induction of the first 25 honorees
into the University's Athletics Hall of Fame. Hall
of Fame ceremonies will take place on Friday evening,
October 10. On Saturday, October 11, the Ratner Athletics
Center dedication and tours will be followed by the
Homecoming Picnic and Football Game, in which the
Maroons will play Pomona College. For information
