Welcome to the DECEMBER edition of UCHICAGO.EDU, a monthly e-bulletin
bringing you online news about the University of Chicago and its larger
community of alumni and friends.

Your December/03 University of Chicago Magazine is in the mail. It's already
online at: http://magazine.uchicago.edu.

Here's a sampling from the DECEMBER issue:

* ZONE OF CONTENTION

Bruce Cumings, may be the best way to prevent another, more dangerous
conflict:
http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0312/features/index.shtml

* LIFE OF THE BODY
The University gets physical with the recently launched Gerald Ratner
Athletics Center:
http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0312/features/life.shtml

* IMMERSION THEORY
How one Chicago professor teaches undergraduate biology--and why it's a
harbinger for science education to come:
http://magazine.uchicago.edu/0312/features/theory.shtml

* AND DON'T FORGET THE MAGAZINE'S ALUMNI PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
The grand prize is $500, and entries must be postmarked by December 31,
2003. The judge is Magazine contributing editor and Pulitzer Prize-winning
photographer Dan Dry. For contest guidelines:
http://magazine.uchicago.edu/about/photo-contest.shtml

NEWS FROM CHICAGO

* COLLEGE GRAD NAMED MARSHALL SCHOLAR
Margaret Hagan, AB'03, is one of 40 students nationwide--and the 17th U of C
graduate--to receive a British Marshall scholarship. Hagan, currently
pursuing a master's degree at the Central European University in Budapest,
will use her scholarship to do graduate work in Northern Ireland, studying
political science and peace and conflict resolution:
http://www-news.uchicago.edu/releases/03/031117.marshall.shtml

* COETZEE'S NOBEL LECTURE IN CHARACTER
Chicago professor J. M. Coetzee's Nobel Prize in Literature lecture,
delivered December 7 in Stockholm, discussed "the business of writing"--in
the voice of Daniel Defoe's castaway Robinson Crusoe:
http://www.nobel.se/literature/laureates/2003/coetzee-lecture.html

RESEARCH AT CHICAGO

* BALLOON OF COSMIC PROPORTIONS TO CARRY COSMIC-RAY DETECTOR
Chicago physicists will launch a huge, unmanned balloon--carrying a
three-ton payload--almost 130,000 feet over Antarctica this month in a hunt
for high-energy cosmic rays:
http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/031211/cosmic-rays.shtml

* THE MONKEY'S MA: NATURE TRUMPS NURTURE
Young monkeys reared by a foster mom are more likely to exhibit the
aggressive or friendly behavior of their birth mothers. The study by Chicago
researcher Dario Maestripieri, published in the current issue of
Developmental Psychobiology, provides the first evidence of the
inheritability of social-behavior traits among non-human primates and may
help researchers understand the biological origins of characteristics that
shape human socialization:

FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

* WELCOME HOME
Whenever you're on campus, stop by the new Alumni House at the corner of
56th Street and Woodlawn Avenue. You can relax with a cup of coffee, read
the newspaper, check your e-mail, send a fax, browse through old yearbooks
or new publications by alumni and faculty, and visit with students or
alumni. For our new address and a look at current staff:
http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/aa-staff.html

* TRAVEL IN MIND FOR THE YEAR AHEAD
It's time to check your vacation calendar against the 2004 list of alumni
offerings and choose the faculty-led study trip that suits your interests.
The Amazon, Sorrento, Poland and the Elbe River, Oxford, the Dordogne,
Greenland, the Baltic, Costa Rica, the Mediterranean, Big Bend National
Park, Orvieto, and Moorish Spain--all are beckoning you:
http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/study.html

* KNOW SOME ALUMNI WHO CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
The Alumni Board of Governors, your voice on campus, will be electing new
members in April. The 25-member group sets policy for the Alumni Association
and advises the University on matters of interest and concern to alumni. To
read about the board's responsibilities and submit your nominations, go to:
http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/bog.html
